About Judith Grove

I grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts, met my husband Thomas in college and over the next 14 years we lived in California, Minnesota, Iceland and Virginia.  In 198o we moved back to Massachusetts and chose to live in Framingham where Tom took a position as an English Professor at Framingham State University. Our sons attended Framingham Public Schools. Our younger son was one of Framingham's first Sage students and was a member of the last graduating class from Framingham South High School.  He attended Harvard University.  Our older son has his PhD from Yale University.

I was the first in my family to attend college.  Financial aid made it possible for me to earn a B.A. cum laude in Biology from Harvard University, and a Master's Degree in Biology and Teaching from Wesleyan University. I have also done post-graduate work in computer science and statistics.  Education has always been of great importance to our family and will be one of my primary concerns if I become a City Council Member.

In addition to teaching math and science in California public schools, I worked for 25 years in the field of ophthalmology.  I hired, trained and supervised medical staff, performed eye exams and ophthalmic photography and assisted in eye surgery at Framingham Union Hospital   The most demanding part of my work was to measure, calculate and select the power of the artificial lenses implanted during cataract surgery in thousands of patients.  This work required dedication to detail, absolute accuracy and accountability.  I believe that accountability has been lacking under our current form of government and is an essential qualification for our future mayor and Council members.

After I retired, I became a Town Meeting Member and my husband joined Town Meeting a year later. I have been a member of the Standing Committees on Community Services and Planning and Zoning.  I presently serve as Clerk of the Standing Committee on Ways & Means Committee and as a member of the Standing Committee on Rules. My husband serves on the Standing Committee of Public Works.

My lifelong passion is social and environmental justice.  In 2015 I was nominated by our State Representative, Chris Walsh and honored with a Massachusetts Unsung Heroine Award by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

The Award citation read "Judith is a member of Town Meeting of Framingham but she goes far beyond representing Precinct 15.  When she is not working to make sure that the South Side of Framingham gets the attention it needs from the local town and the State, particularly in relation to issues of environmental justice, such as cleaning up the contamination from coal tar, arsenic, cyanide and other toxins in the soil and groundwater in the Town, she is busy working to build a skate park.  The skate park would be a safe dedicated place for 2,500 young skateboarders so they don't have to ride on the sidewalks, the streets, school campuses, parking lots and other places around Framingham."
